Quite why it's taken over twenty years for this score to see the light of day on CD is difficult to understand, but the wait was certainly worth it. I can't see a better score being released this year. Sound quality is crisp and ideally suited to highlight the exquisite orchestrations by Newman and Jack Change Your Way - Randy Newman - Ragtime. Liner notes feature both a frighteningly funny, sardonic introduction by Newman one of the wittiest men in the world and a description of the making of the film and Newman's experience on it by Jerry McCulley, which is informative and amusing in equal measure.

Doctorow's acclaimed novel received eight Oscar nominations, but failed to win a single trophy. Starting with the "Main Title", a solo violin and piano start to play out Wooden Brother - Woven Hand - Woven Hand plaintive tune, and then are joined in by strings and accordion.

But not to be forgotten, as this is a Randy Newman soundtrack, are the songs: "Change Your Way", and the Oscar-nominated "One More Hour" which uses the main theme from the film. All of these are enjoyable, and add to the enjoyment of the album.

It's the only new track on the album, and while I would have liked to have more music released on the album, the minute CD is still an enjoyable listen. The liner Change Your Way - Randy Newman - Ragtime are rather detailed and informative - the history of the film and score is pretty much laid out for you to read.

  2. Jun 20,  · Randy Newman's work for Ragtime was as stunning as Foreman's work was stultifying. Haunting, melodic, allusive and memorable, this is Newman's best movie work, and the best evidence ever that musical genius is genetic: Newman is the nephew of two of the greatest movie composers of the previous generation: Lionel and Alfred Newman/5(28).

  4. A pair of original songs by the composer add further attraction to the album. "One More Hour" is interpreted magnificently by Jennifer Warnes and is without question one of Newman's finest songs for a film. He also gives us the amusing "Change Your Way" (and performs it), designed for the opening titles but ultimately unused in the film.

  5. Jun 20,  · The movie was (and is) a major disappointment, a pale and unidimensional rendition of the novel. As fate would have it, however, this disappointing movie yielded one of the greatest movie scores of all time. Randy Newman's work for Ragtime was as /5(28).
