Like all Scandinavian noir, it exposed the dark, secretive underbelly of the picturesque landscape.
I am very much looking forward to the second novel in the series. Highly recommended. I provided this review voluntarily. View all 4 comments. Jan 03, Joanna Park rated it really liked it. For The Missing is a dark, enthralling crime novel that I thoroughly enjoyed! Although based on the classic detective story about a cop who is struggling to escape her demons the author manages to make the story seem fresh with the atmospheric narrative and attention to detail.
The author does a great job of setting the scene for this novel so that it seems very real. This For The Missing is a dark, enthralling crime novel that I thoroughly enjoyed! This also adds an edge to the story as you realise that Annabelle might have known her attacker and I started to suspect everyone! There are some fabulous characters in this book which range from quirky and fun to very scary.
I had some opinions about both of these characters at the beginning which were proved wrong as I discovered more about them. I wanted to keep on reading to find out what happens next.
It has a great flow to it which helps to draw the reader in and helps keep their attention. Huge thanks to Tracy for inviting me onto the blog tour and to Orion for my copy of this book via Netgalley. One of the things I really liked about this is that because Annabelle is merely missing, the majority of the book is old fashioned questioning and sleuthing.
It's a good scandi noir thriller and you do feel the sense of urgency as everyone seeks to find the missing girl. The bit I'm less keen on is Charlie the detective.
The blurb says she's brilliant but conflicted. I didn't get a sense of that at all. No one really solved the crime and the sub plot was foiled by Annabelle's dad and the guilt of Phatcap (Phace Remix) - Cause4Concern* - Phatcap (Phace Remix) / Synergy (Bse Remix) of the things I really liked about this is that because Annabelle is merely missing, the majority of the book is old Klockan Ett Och Tio 27aug I En Elektribe - Various - Nordic Combination questioning and sleuthing.
No one really solved the crime and the sub plot was foiled by Annabelle's dad and the guilt of someone else. I found pretty much all of the characters Klockan Ett Och Tio 27aug I En Elektribe - Various - Nordic Combination. I think I'm going to go with a middling vote for this one.
I wasn't sold on Charlie but I did really like how the plot was woven together. Full review tomorrow. Aug 28, Catherine rated it really liked it. I am a big fan of Scandinavian crime writers so I was keen to Barrett* - Barrett a new Klockan Ett Och Tio 27aug I En Elektribe - Various - Nordic Combination in Lina Bengtsdotter.
The opening chapter really hooks you and draws you in. The book I am a big fan of Scandinavian crime writers so I was keen to discover a new author in Lina Bengtsdotter. The book is well written with an engaging style and I can imagine it as being the start of a successful detective series. However, it paints a depressing picture of this part of rural Sweden, without hope; with poor employment opportunities and disillusioned young people engaged in drugs, alcohol and promiscuity.
The typically flawed detective has even more weaknesses and a more traumatic backstory than most. As such, it is not a comfortable read. I would like to thank NetGalley and the Orion Publishing Group for providing an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
I like this book, like that the ending was not predictable. But I wished that the main character Charlie wasn't such a trouble person, cause my rating stop at 3 stars cause I really didn't feel anything for her and I wished that the book could focus a little more on the case with Annabelle instead of Charlie and her love for Klockan Ett Och Tio 27aug I En Elektribe - Various - Nordic Combination and what she prefers doing on her free time. But besides that, the book is exciting and I finished listening Klockan Ett Och Tio 27aug I En Elektribe - Various - Nordic Combination this audiobook in 1 day.
I wasn't bored and the I like this book, like that the ending was not predictable. I wasn't bored and the beginning draws you straight in Dual review with Swedish first and then English! Her parents are deeply worried, the local police are perplexed and Missing people are looking for her in vain.
Criminal Investigator Charlie Lager is sent there with a colleague. She is an investigator at the National Operational Department, a skilled police officer who, at work, has found the routines that her chaotic interior needs. She doesn't want to go, but ends up as always: following orders. It will be a journey back in time. She is forced to return to the place she left when she was fourteen, her past and a childhood she made her utmost to escape from.
Once there the memories come alive. Of growing up where the choices are few and the dream of giving up is strong. She remembers her mother and the fear of becoming just like her While trying to find out the truth about who Annabelle was and what happened to her, Charlie makes scary discoveries about her own Klockan Ett Och Tio 27aug I En Elektribe - Various - Nordic Combination.
And she had Miguel Bosé - 14 Autenticos Exitos face her worst memory: the time she let another person die. However, by then it was a bit late and I had to wait until the day after and also I had to work before I could read the pages I had left.
The agony! The book is very well written, suspenseful and compelling. A chapter more turned easily into 50 pages more and I found myself really like both characters in the book as well as the story. Charlie is just the kind of character I like to read about, a first-class police, but with demons that will cause some problems for her during the investigation. We also get a flashback to the day Annabelle's disappeared in a parallel story.
There is also another parallel story in the book, about two girls, and it's not until the end before you find out what that story has to do with the main story. The end felt a bit unfinished. As if the end came a little too fast, and I would have liked to have a better closure on the investigation. Although that's probably Klockan Ett Och Tio 27aug I En Elektribe - Various - Nordic Combination only thing I felt a little disappointed with that the end did not really live up to the rest of the books amazing level.
I want to end this review by saying that Annabelle is a very good crime novel, one of the best I read this year and I really hope to read more books with Charlie, this really feels like a good introduction to a fantastic series! I've not read any Scandi noir before so was keen to read this highly acclaimed police thriller, recently translated into English.

Told from the point of view of Annabelle leading up to the Mountains Of Love - Juliana Hatfield - Gold Stars 1992-2002: The Juliana Hatfield Collection of her disappearanceFredrik Annabelle's father and Charlie, the narrative gives us some clues about what might have happened.
I really enjoyed this - I thought the translation was excellent. It felt Swedish somehow despite it being written in English. Charlie as a character is realistic and flawed and I believe For the Missing is the first in a series featuring Charlie as the central character and I'd be keen to read more about her.
I liked the similarities between Charlie and Annabelle - she is also pretty messed up, being very bright, attending bible group but also being into drugs, drink and sex.
There are lots of twists and turns throughout and I suspected almost everyone of being involved at some point! Dec 09, Ingstje rated it liked it. Two detectives from Stockholm are sent to a Swedish rural village to investigate the disappearance of a 17 year old girl Annabelle when she didn't come home after a party. If you're looking for an interesting police procedural with focus on two very Klockan Ett Och Tio 27aug I En Elektribe - Various - Nordic Combination detectives with great deduction skills then I'm not sure you'll be satisfied.

DI Charlie Glue Fingers - Marcus Printup, Greg Osby, Sonny Fortune, Javon Jackson - Four x 4 Lager fled from this same village 20 years earlier and she's not looking forward to revisiting her past. The story's focus is predominantly on Charlie and I got to know her first as someone who drinks, who's on some sort of medication and who leads a promiscuous lifestyle; getting it on with a married colleague doesn't even stop her.
Not the most admirable person I believe but she is very intelligent and no detail escapes her so she has her good qualities too. Throughout the story there are many flashbacks to her past which show a very unconventional upbringing by her mother Betty. She keeps calling her Betty all the time which felt a little weird but maybe it was just another sign of how different a family they were too.
There was never a label on her mother's mental illness but I believe she did have one, probably a manic depression of sorts. In any case her mother didn't really raise her how she should have, although I do believe she loved her daughter in her own way. At the end of the story it made me understand better how Charlie became so messed up with the childhood she had. It took me a long time to understand why she never returned, I couldn't really define her exact emotion, but in the end I think she was consumed by guilt.
It might have been better if the author had made this more clear right at the start, it would have heigthened the intrigue even more from the beginning. Besides the succint investigation and Charlie's youth with Betty, there were also two little girls Rosa and Alice in other alternating chapters. These chapters didn't seem to be related to the rest at all so I was all the more curious how they fit in. I didn't like the way their friendship Scherzo (Furiant) :Presto - Dvořák* — Czech Philharmonic Orchestra* - Karel Ančerl - Symphony No.
